How I Use:

I love the shine and softness that BioSilk Silk Therapy with Organic Coconut Oil brings to my hair. To use, I just apply a small dab (a little less than a pea size amount) to my super thick shoulder length hair. I concentrate at the ends and then I work up (avoiding the root area). I apply it as the final touch in my hair routine when my hair is already dried and styled. This last step adds moisture, locks in shine, and reduces frizz.

Plus, can I just say how much I enjoy shopping at Sally Beauty Supply? I have found some of my favorite hair products, hair tools, and nail products there. I tend to shop there at least every month to stock up on my staple beauty products. So, I am excited to see this new line! 

Silk 21® contains the 21 amino acids needed by your hair. It replenishes dry or damaged hair with essential moisturizing botanical extracts and herbs.  It also provides thermal protection and strengthens and revitalizes hair while leaving it silky smooth with incredible shine and UV protection. The line also prevents color loss.

According to Silk 21®, hair is made up of proteins formed from multiple amino acids. My Hair:

Before diving into more details about each product in the Silk 21® line, let me tell ya'll a bit more about my hair. I have shoulder length highlighted hair. My hair is heavily highlighted, so I do have quite a bit of damage from all the bleach. I try to be gentle to my hair. However, I still have damage, breakage, and dryness. Plus, my hair is super-duper thick and very hard to comb out. While it is straight, it is somewhat coarse from the damage. I tend to gravitate towards hair products that are very hydrating and smoothing.

Overall, I am really a big fan of the NEW Silk 21® from Sally Beauty Supply! It works wonderfully on my dry and damaged thick blonde hair. The shampoo and conditioner cleansed and conditioned my hair and left it feeling clean and smooth while also leaving it very protected. The Styling Cream helps to provide an extra boost of conditioning and detangling while protecting my hair from the blow dryer. The Silk Repair & Shine Serum is the perfect last touch to my hair routine as it softens and leaves great shine. After using the combination of the 4 Silk 21® products, my hair is left feeling so smooth and silky. This line leaves behind a protective layer that smooths your hair and protects it without it looking or feeling greasy. Plus, the scent of this line really lingers in your hair and it is just such a lovely soft scent! I am absolutely thrilled with the results and will continue to use these products. I can see how use of these products over time could result in better conditioned hair as your hair is so protected by the silky layer that these products seem to leave behind. I love this line!!!

Is it crazy to think that something you have been doing for years could be contribuiting to hair damage? Lets investigate! When you wet comb your hair after the shower, what is the one thing you might do? Take the comb, start at the front of the hairline and comb back. Do you do this? I am sometimes guily, too! Apparently, this is the worst way to detangle! 

Here's why combing from the top hurts your hair: 

The way you detangle your hair can either hurt or help sun, wind, salt and chorline damaged strands. So, are you actually combing your hair the right way? Since hair is in its most delicate state wet, we must be gentle with it! It is vital to detangle from the bottom up, starting at your ends not your scalp. Lets call this the "Bottoms Up Method".

This is why you should switch to the "Bottoms Up Method":

How will starting at the tips of your hair prevent unnecessary breakage from occurring?

“When you comb hair from the bottom up, you are working with less surface area to untangle at one time”, explains Fernando Salas, creator of White Sands Haircare. “Working in smaller sections like this is key. When you try to comb from the top down, think of how much hair you are attempting to pull a comb through at one time.”

Jet Set by ColorProof: Traveling with these Cute TSA Approved Minis!

Is anyone else traveling for Thanksgiving this year? We are taking a big trip this year! It is my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary and the whole family is going on a Disney cruise to celebrate. So, I will be packing soon. So exciting!!! 

I am the world's worst packer (hanging head in mock shame). I tend to pack too much and then never use everything. I am determined to break my bad packing cycle with this trip. I am traveling with two preschoolers. So, I honestly can't be bothered with too much excess "stuff". I want to try to realistically pack for a 5 day trip. 

One area where I can really trim down the excess is with my toilitries. Yes, I am a beauty blogger. So, I do have a lot of enthusiasm for products and a lot of items at my fingertips. However, I am going to really try to only bring what I need: a small bag of neutral makeup with only 1 item in each category (i.e., one blush, one neutral palette, one eyeliner, etc), basic toilitries (shave gel, deoderant, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc), and minimal hair products (in small containers or travel-sized minis). 

Hair Products:

My hair products and tools are my biggest items that would take up the bulk of my packing: hair dryer, huge bottles of shampoo and conditioner, big cans of hairspray, etc...So, the best way to trim this down is to either use travel minis or decant big bottles into travel containers. I am going to pack using a combination of both.

I am such a fan of CHI hair tools! This CHI Glamfetti Iron is so quick and easy to use. I almost always seem to be in a hurry to get ready. With 2 kids under 4, I am limited in my "getting ready" time. Usually, I have to get up before everyone else and rush to get ready before anyone wakes up. This CHI Glamfetti Iron makes fixing my hair super quick. My hair drives me a bit crazy. It was totally straight for years. However, after having children, my hormones changed my hair it is now wavy in the very top section. It is not wavy enough to wear "curly" but not straight enough to wear straight. Nothing like the heat and humidity to wreak havoc on my hair! Yes, even straight hair like mine gets frizzy and unmanageable. Keeping my hair nourished with good products and styling it with great tools definitely keeps it looking good and under control.

My Hair:
My hair is super long and highlighted. It is somewhat dry and damaged. However, it really does look healthy and I attribute that to using good products and being gentle with it when styling. I always let it air dry as long as I can before blow drying and limit use of a curling or flat iron for special occasions. I always use heat protectants, oils, or serums when I do any heat styling.

Freeze It: Powerful and Pink Hairspray

Finley Hair Powder: Dry Shampoo Review

Since I don't like having to wash my hair every day, I am highly intrigued by all of the dry shampoo products on the market. I have tried Psssssst! and Tresemme Fresh Start, covered in my previous Dry Shampoo Review. Both Psssssst! and Tressemme are spray products; and I think both work great! 

What are dry shampoos? They are essentially hair powders or powders in a spray form. The powder works to absorb extra oils near your scalp. This, in turn, makes your hair look and feel cleaner. Also, the products usually have a fresh scent to mask any odor. The spray products also may contain clays, citrus, and some alcohol which all work to minimize and oils and make your hair look and feel fresher. 

My experience thus far with all of my dry shampoo testing has been fabulous! Honestly, now that I used dry shampoos, I don't think I can live without them! Not only do they extend how long you can go between a full washing, but also they add great volume to your hair! With my thick yet fine long hair, a volume boost is always needed and appreciated.

Dry Shampoos Review: Psssssst! and TRESemme Fresh Start

Where have dry shampoos been all my life? I love them! 

I usually wash my hair every/other day (depending on how much I exercise);but, know that it is more healthy for your hair to wash your hair *less* often. I hate that dirty "feel"; so, I am always wanting to wash my hair more than I know I should.

Using a dry shampoo is a great way to get "one more day" out of your hair wash. With dry shampoos I can go 3 days without washing my hair.

FYI: I have blond normal hair that is dry on the ends from highlighting. AND, the funny thing...I always seem to get hair-compliments on day-3 when my hair is the dirtiest and I have used a dry shampoo!!!

I have been using Psssssst! occasionally over the past couple years and realized, as I was completely using up my can the other morning, that I need to write a review!

Psssssst! 

I first heard about Psssssst! and dry shampoo in general years ago when reading a magazine article (can't remember what mag)about how Jessica Simpson's hair stylist, Ken Paves, uses Psssssst! in Jessica's hair to add volume at the crown, I figured it was worth a try! And, yes, it is a great volumizer! It is a "spray powder"...which is pretty much powder in aerosol form (with, I believe alcohol in the product)...so, really it works in 3 ways...the powder absorbs excess oil, the alcohol "cleanses", and the scent masks any "odor" of dirty hair (yuck! I hate dirty-hair smell).

How to:

• Shake can very well.
• Hold can about 6 inches from scalp 
• Spray into root areas. I like to apply to crown area and temples. 
• Take fingers into root area where you sprayed, like a "rake" and massage the product into your hair. "Fluff" hair with your fingers. The product can says to use a brush/comb...but, I like just using my fingers. 
• you will instantly see the volume. Since the product adds powder to your hair, it provides more "density" for volume.

FYI: Re: Your hair color:

• Use carefully if you have dark hair! This product will leave a slight white residue in your hair. This can be helped by brushing out the product after application...and "raking" through your hair with your fingers.
• On my blond hair the white cast is really not that noticeable. Actually, I think the white-cast helps disguise my roots when I am getting close to needing a touch up for my highlights. 

Overall...a big rave for Psssssst! It lets me go "one more day" without washing my hair (which is good for your hair)! It really does refresh your hair and make your hair look cleaner. The finish is somewhat "dulling" so, it is good to just focus on the root area where your hair might be more oily.

Pssssst! smells great, it adds volume, and for my highlighted hair the white cast disguises my roots! A total RAVE! You can find Psssssst at Walgreen's for about $6.

Oh, and I must mention that i absolutely love the 70's style retro-packaging. I believe that Psssssst! is the first dry shampoo invented.

Funny, the can states use for "between shampoos, on camping trips (love this, as I am a camper-yes, a beauty girl that camps), after sports, and when ill".

TRESeme Fresh Start:

Since I love Psssssst! so much, I ventured to see "what else was out there" as far as Dry Shampoos for comparison. I picked this up at Walgreens yesterday..and sale alert: it is currently on sale...2/$5.00, so I got a fantastic deal! The can says that it contains "mineral clay and citrus". I noticed on the back that it contains alcohol and cornstarch...so, very similar in ingredients to the Psssssst!

So, inital impressions on TRESemme Fresh Start:

• Works just like Psssssst!...actually, I see very little difference in the products. Just a different fragrance
• Great deal at less than $3 on sale! 
• Does leave a slight white/grey residue (similar to the Psssssst! residue), but I didn't find that to be overly noticeable in my blond hair. But, I could see how this would be a problem with darker hair. 
• The Tresseme comes in 2 verions: I purchased the spray version for Oily/straight to normal hair. The other version is a mousse for curly hair. It just seems to me that the spray version would be easier to work with as you wont be "wetting" your hair with mousse. 

Which brand do I like better...honestly, its a toss-up! They both work the same on my hair. So, just a matter of preference for the scent. I like the Psssssst! scent slightly better; but, will likely just purchase whichever one is on sale.

Side note: Both cans state that the products are highly flammable (so, dont know about using it while near a campfire!!!) and to use in a ventilated area. Also, the products do contain quite a few chemicals (and I am certainly not a chemistry expert or anything) so probably best for occasional use.
