College Couponing 101: How to Hack Savings While at School

 Affiliate Link Blogger Ambassador

College should be one of the hardest, but most exciting times in your life. But between the textbooks, food, and tuition alone, it can also be the most expensive. The good news? Student discounts are everywhere, if you know where to look. We asked some scholarly savers their couponing tips for college students looking to save a little money in our Couponing in College Scholarship Contest. From downloading apps to subscribing to your local newspaper (that's right, the paper), we received some amazing, money saving tips - some that can even earn you rewards just for being in class.

We’d like to congratulate our scholarship winner, Gabriel Rios from the University of Central Florida! His essay "Couponing in College + Money Saving Pro Tips" offers 11 tips for anyone in college looking to save money - everything from signing up for email blasts to using an app that rewards you for actually studying (for once). Gabriel will receive our $2,000 scholarship award and will be listed on Dealspotr’s Scholarship page in our winner’s circle. Congratulations Gabriel! See past winners and keep up to date on our latest scholarship here.

So how can you save money in college?

We had so many amazing submission from college students around the nation, and we’ve compiled their most helpful and unique couponing tips here.

Use the Pocket Points app to earn rewards just for being in class

By Jove, if you haven’t heard of Pocket Points, download the app immediately! The concept is very simple: don’t use your phone whilst in class! By not using your phone (and having the app open), you’ll be gaining points that you can use for coupons on any affiliated store in your area. Personally, I’ve used Pocket Points on digital coupons for free ice cream, discounts on clothes, longboards, and a pretty awesome “buy one get one free” deal for headphones. If you happen to have a cheap throwaway phone, even better!

Always look for student discounts

Pretty much everywhere offers a student discount. Where Spotify and Amazon offer discounts on their premium memberships, places like American Airlines offer special trips for participating schools. If you have a favorite subscription - whether it’s to the New Yorker or the local gym - find out if they have a student discount! Your status as a student is a card that screams “I’m broke!” to the world, and more often than not, your favorite companies have an answer to your call.

Use a budgeting app to track your spending

It’s easy to have the mission to save, but how can you save if you don’t know where the money is going? If you want to start your life as a frugal college student you have to understand what you’re spending on and from there cut out non-necessities. That's where my trusty friend, Mint the app comes in! Mint connects itself to your bank account, allowing you to see your spending automatically. You can also create specific budgets for things like going out with friends, food, clothing and whatever else you want. Mint also has a pretty cool feature that allows you to never charge more than you can pay on credit card if it’s your first one.

Go old-fashioned & check the newspaper

The first item I purchased when I moved off-campus was a subscription to the local paper (through a discount received on Groupon). Not only does the paper provide me with the local store ads and sales, but also the ads for the big box stores... Your student paper can also be a valuable resource. Local businesses commonly advertise and offer special deals to students. There are often fast-food flyers quickly stuffed inside for the student always on the go. Place the fast food coupons in your vehicle glove box; it makes for a quick, easy, and cheap snack while out on errands or a bite to eat after a movie with friends. Your friends may think you are crazy at first, but when you start to save them money on a meal they will quickly thank you.

Make sure your coupons are organized

After you have all of your coupons, you need to sort them. Make sure to keep them organized, because losing a coupon is pretty much just like throwing money away. You can organize your coupons by using envelopes and paper clips. If you want to be a little more advanced you can use a coupon binder. This way, you can carry your binder to the store and it is easier to sort through all of them.

"Deal share" in person - split BOGO deals with a friend

Deal sharing is something that a lot of people overlook. Have you ever had a time where there is a really good BOGO sale but you only want one? This is where deal sharing comes in handy. If you only want one you and a friend can split the price of the BOGO. For example if jeans are buy one get one half off and the jeans cost $40 you can each pay $30 for one pair of jeans rather than buying two pairs for $60. This way you don’t get tricked into buying unnecessary things. This also works for food deals. Another way to save with a friend is to send each other invite codes for apps and loyalty programs because usually they will reward you for signing up and your friend for inviting you.

Instead of going out to eat, track student activities that offer free food

It is not always easy to keep track of how much is spent, especially when hanging out with friends and going out to eat. An alternative to this is to attend student activities that offer food. Many school activities are free, so you and your friends can save some money by attending. However, if you are going out, there are plenty of places to eat or hang out that have student discounts, so plan ahead of time.

If you do go out to eat, use a coupon or a punch card

I also almost never go out to eat without a coupon. My favorite restaurants that have great coupon deals are Chick-fil-A, Flame Broiler, frozen yogurt shops, or Souplantation. Restaurants like these often have stamp cards or other rewards programs to encourage people to come back more often. Every time you buy something you get a stamp and after a certain number of stamps, you get a free item. I have an entire section in my wallet dedicated to stamp cards.

Check if your school offers free software for students

A lot of students use specialty computer programs in their curriculum, and these aren't always cheap. Your school may offer a discount or free software that you need for class, from Final Draft to Photoshop.
Many schools offer programs such as Microsoft Office 365 for free as students of the university. Be sure to check what your school offers you to help you as a students. Get educated and use your resources!

Use cash back apps like Ibotta

Ibotta is better than coupons. After downloading the app, you can unlock cash rewards on products and services by completing simple tasks like watching a short advertisement. Then, after buying your products at the specified location, Ibotta puts those cash rewards right into your bank account! Similar to couponing, Ibotta gives you discounts on products and services. The difference is, those discounts come back to you in cash, a much more rewarding format for college students! To top it off, Ibotta gives you cash back at over 500,000 locations such as movie theaters, grocery stores and gas stations!

Use grocery store-specific apps

If there are two words that will bring college students running its “free food." Grocery store apps therefore should be an essential part of every college students’ phone. Grocery stores typically have their weekly and/or monthly coupons, which are available to all shoppers, on the app. Frequently they also have specific or special coupons available to those who are part of the loyalty program. You simply add these coupons to your loyalty card on the app, so when you swipe your loyalty card at the register your discounts are applied. Then you get the joy of watching the amount of money you’re spending on food (one of the biggest monthly expenses) drop.
Read more tips by Emily Adams from Clemson University in Couponing in College.

Stick to buying only the essentials

What are wants and what are needs? Don’t get these things confused! Stay organized and know what you need to save money. You need food to survive, but you want that Nintendo Switch and those games that cost $60 apiece (speaking from actual experience, oops). Needless to say, there’s nothing wrong with having goals and saving money up to reach them. Make a list and stick to it. Think a grocery list that will extend to clothing, textbooks, food, etc. To follow, you can organize what sales are available or plan out when to spend your hard earned money.

Help for My Damaged Hair: Madam CJ Walker Wonderful Pre-Wash Protein Treatment

Affiliate Link Press Sample

Oh my poor hair! I am combatting some really bad damage and breakage. Trust me, I baby my hair. I wash ever/other day, use good products, air dry as much as I can, and do weekly or bi-weekly deep conditioning and protein treatments. However, a recent bad color/highlighting experience has left my hair with chemical damage. Luckily, I am with a new colorist and am working towards getting my hair back into shape. My hair has been overprocessed and has breakage near the crown. Plus, the texture is "funny" when its wet. I suspect cuticle and possibly even some cortex damage in spots. I recently cut off about 7 inches and that certainly helps. However, much of my damage is near the roots and in the top layers of my hair. I am just going to have to grow out most of the damage.

The good news is that there are products that can help! One of my favorites that I mention frequently and have reviewed here, is the Aphogee Two-Step Protein Treatment which I do before and after chemical services at the salon. I also use shampoos and conditioners formulated for damaged hair. On a weekly basis, I do conditioning and strengthening treatments. I tend to rotate these with my weekly Olaplex treatments.

When you face damage from highlighting and chemical services, one of the most important things you can do for your hair is to add protein! Hair is approximately 91% keratin protein, and with daily styling and frequent exposure to chemicals, this can break up and weaken hair structure, ultimately causing fragile, unhealthy strands. This is certainly the current situation with my hair.

The great news is that there are so many good protein treatments on the market! One of my recent favorites is the Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture’s Dream Come True Wonderful Pre-Wash Protein Treatment. As a powerful, protein-packed reconstructer, Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture’s Dream Come True Wonderful Pre-Wash Protein Treatment ($32) is a rich cream to help strengthen your hair's keratin. It nourishes the scalp and strands before you shampoo, helping to fortify hair and prevent breakage.

The ultra-nourishing Dream Come True Wonderful Pre-Wash Protein Treatment deeply penetrates to support the building blocks of hair. It restores dry, brittle strands damaged by chemical treatments, heat styling, and environmental aggressors.

To Use:
Simply apply the Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture’s Dream Come True Wonderful Pre-Wash Protein Treatment from scalp to ends on damp hair before shampooing. I pay extra attention to areas of damage. The you leave it on for 15 minutes. I like to just do this at the start of my shower. I wet my hair immediately and wring it out at the start of my shower and apply the Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture’s Dream Come True Wonderful Pre-Wash Protein Treatment. Then I proceed to wash and shave, etc. Then I rinse out the hair treatment and proceed with hair washing.

I find that using the Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture’s Dream Come True Wonderful Pre-Wash Protein Treatment on a every/other week basis adds luster, shine, and softness to my hair, while helping to prevent split ends and repair damage.

Key Ingredients:
  • Shea Butter: Deeply moisturizes while conditioning hair and scalp.
  • Panthenol (Provitamin B5): Blocks moisture and keeps hair shiny.
  • Coconut Oil: Adds luster, shine, and softness to the hair; helps prevent hair breakage and split ends.

Price: $32.00 exclusively at Sephora and Sephora.com

If you are looking for a great treatment for damaged hair, be sure to check out Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture’s Dream Come True Wonderful Pre-Wash Protein Treatment! Your hair will thank you! ;)

As always, thanks so much for reading!

Cover It! Mally Beauty Ultimate Performance See the Light Concealer

 Affiliate Link Press Sample

Finding the perfect concealer is a constant search for me. Actually, the discovery of a really great high-coverage concealer is one of the moments that first sparked my interest in makeup all those years ago.

So, why this interest in concealers? Well, I am plagued with very dark under eye circles. They are so dark that if I walked around without concealer or with an inadequate concealer, I would be constantly asked "are you tired" or "are you sick". Yes, the circles are that dark. I blame heredity, allergies, and a general lack of sleep. While I wish there was a magic "cure" for dark circles, I do realize that the best way to deal with dark circles is with a very good high coverage concealer.

Over the years I have found a few that are at the top of my list. I try out countless concealers and very few have enough coverage without looking cakey and heavy. So, I get super excited when I find a concealer that meets all of my requirements! I am excited to say that the Mally Beauty Ultimate Performance See the Light Concealer is really good!!!

Want to give your skin a lift while concealing dark circles and spots? Mally Beauty's Ultimate Performance See the Light Concealer is the answer. Its color correcting formula evens skin tone while blending seamlessly into the skin. The creamy formula instantly melts, creating a flawless finish in no time. The coverage really is amazing. This concealer hides my very dark under eye circles beautifully without looking at all cakey nor heavy. The shade Fair works really well with my very light skin tone. This concealer wears all day on me. I just love it! It is so rare that I find a concealer that really works to cover my very dark under eye circles...and this one sure does work for that!

The Scoop:

  • Retails for $24
  • Available in: Fair, Light, Medium, Tan
Have you tried this concealer? How did it work for you? If you haven't checked it out yet, I highly recommend it!

As always, thanks so much for reading!

Top 10 Free Online Couponing Workshops for Beginners

Sponsored Post Affiliate Link Blogger Ambassador

This post originally appeared on the Dealspotr blog. Dealspotr is the most accurate coupon site that pays you to save. I'm @pammyblogsbeauty on Dealspotr, use my link to join today and earn 5,000 bonus points.

When extreme couponing became big in the past decade or so, there were few outlets that offered coupons online, let alone outlets where extreme couponers could share their methods for saving money. Today, almost every extreme couponer has their own site, and there are more popping up quite often.

If you're new to the coupon world, these extreme couponers can be a big help to you. With online video tutorials, guides, and printables like grocery lists and savings calendars, couponers have put together their own online couponing classes, where coupon newbies can learn the tricks of the trade.
We've come up with 10 free online couponing workshops that offer "Couponing 101" guides and resources for anyone looking to get into the world of couponing. Read on to see which site you should use to start your journey to savings.

Southern Savers

Best for: Couponers in the South

Jenny, who heads up Southern Savers, has really put a lot of time into her couponing workshop. It comes complete with a 30 page handbook, outlining multiple categories like when to buy products so you know you’re getting their rock bottom price, and how to save your Sunday inserts to keep yourself organized (and in turn, sane). While the site is dedicated to couponing in the Southern states (she even has a guide to the couponing policies at Winn-Dixie and popular Southern grocery stores), the handbook is available online, accessible to anyone. Jenny takes her class on the road with in-person workshops - so if you're located in the South, maybe you'll catch her on tour.

The Krazy Coupon Lady

Best for: The mainstream couponer
While she doesn’t offer just one overall class, the ladies of Krazy Coupon Lady (Heather Wheeler & Joanie Demer) have many resources available on their site, including free e-book in exchange for an email newsletter signup. There's also the Krazy Coupon Lady YouTube channel, which offers high-quality videos to help with couponing at major stores like Rite Aid & Target.

Couponing with Toni

Best for: Visual Learners
Toni's channel, offered solely on YouTube, is good for anyone who prefers a strictly video-based learning experience. Toni updates her channel frequently, and entertains her viewers by reviewing the latest coupon inserts, and taking them with her on her latest trips to the store. She also offers videos for beginners often, like this one for couponing at CVS without Extra Care bucks.

Passion for Savings

Best for: At-your-own-pace learners
Passion for Savings blogger Heather Schisler lays out couponing into 10 lessons, all covering a different category. So you can do each lesson in order, or hop around and only view the topics you’re interested in. The lessons come with with printable notes, a video component, and links to other resources and downloads that can help you on your couponing journey. With everything from coupon lingo to creating a coupon-friendly meal plan, Passion for Savings covers it all in their couponing workshop. They also have just released an app, which Heather talks about below:
Our Passion For Savings App is a great resource for new couponers. They can look up deals by store, get instant deal alerts when new coupons are posted, and there's also a tab to learn how to coupon with videos, tutorials and more to help them get started!

Consumer Queen

Best for: Anyone needing a little coaching

Melissa, owner of Consumer Queen, calls herself a "Personal Coupon Coach." With recent updates including using cashback apps like Ibotta and SavingStar, her 9-lesson guide walks new couponers through the steps she uses to save money with coupons. If you happen to be located in Oklahoma, you can take one of her classes in person for free, as long as you bring a can to donate to the Oklahoma food bank. Melissa says:
ConsumerQueen.com offers complete store match ups, printable coupons and freebies. We teach you hot to find the hottest deals online, how to eat organically and save and we even have Lessons on How to Coupon! We even take it one step further and offer a online support group on Facebook where more than 12,000 people are helping each other find deals.

Free Tastes Good

Best for: Bookworms
While blogger Joni offers tips for new couponers on the Free Tastes Good website, the real learning is in her book, Extreme Couponing. On the site, however, coupon newbies will find a section fully dedicated to helping them learn. Joni covers topics from when you should buy meat, to this interesting bit of couponer knowledge:
"A purchase is a single item and a transaction is your entire order.  When a coupon states  “One per purchase” – This means one manufacturer coupon per item that you purchase."

Grocery Shop for FREE

Best for: Good listeners

Dian and her husband run Grocery Shop for FREE. On the side, to the benefit of new couponers, they have a podcast that touches on a different way to save in every episode. There are frugal date night ideas, Amazon hacks, and tips on couponing at specific stores. Along with the podcast, there are tons of free resources on the site, including links to Dian's couponing e-book, and grocery list printables.

ModMomTV

Best for: Those who prefer exclusivity
This newer site is the brainchild of Laura Thornquist & Natalie Reid, formerly of their own blogs My DFW Mommy and Coupon Crazy Mommy, respectively. The two frugal bloggers joined together to create ModMom TV, where they now talk about more than just coupons. But in keeping with their roots, the duo still offers a couponing class. By signing up for their newsletter, you get access to an hour-long private video that includes a presentation by Natalie on how to get the most out of your coupons, plan your meals to save money, and get cash back on your purchases.

Yes We Coupon

Best for: Quick learners
Yes We Coupon sets itself apart with its couponing workshop, as the site lays out a plan to learn couponing in just seven days. In one week, they guide you through organizing your coupons, finding said coupons, and even practicing ethical couponing. There’s also a helpful list of 5 mistakes new couponers can make, like buying too much too soon and spreading your coupons across too many stores. But don’t worry, they offer remedies for these classic mistakes, too.
Yes We Coupon is a team of bloggers dedicated to bringing you the hottest deals. We post coupon previews, online deals, glitches, clearance, and the latest coupon news and product recalls. We also offer many groups owned by us where we interact with our members one on one and help newbie couponers.

For the Mommas

Best for: Simpletons
For those of you looking for a quick, no hassle way to get started with couponing, For the Mommas is a great resource. With simple infographics and a real-life example of buying orange juice, newbie couponers can quickly learn the fundamentals of couponing, including collecting, organizing, and stacking coupons.

This collection is an entirely silicone and sulfate free hair care line. It intensely moisturizes dry and thick hair while it works to de-frizz your hair and leave your strands smooth. The formula is a super creamy blend that contains ingredients like shea butter, agave nectar, and coconut oil. This line helps to smooth and soften your coarse hair. It leaves my hair beautifully scented and makes it look healthy and shiny.

This collection contains a Shampoo, Conditioner, and a Hair Butter (leave-in or rinse out). I use these products together. I shampoo, then apply conditioner, and then use a touch of the hair butter as a leave in. This combo has really helped my dry and damaged highlighted hair! It makes my hair much easier to comb out and leaves it shiny and nourished. I am really impressed with these products!

OGX Frizz-Defy/Moisture + Shea Soft & Smooth Collection includes the following key ingredients:

  • Shea Butter: with a high concentration of natural vitamins and fatty acids to help deeply nourish and moisturize strands from the inside out.
  • Agave Nectar: is know to be a natural wonder in soothing humectant hair and helps provide moisture and lustrous shine.
  • Coconut Oil: naturally high in fatty acids, the formula helps increases moisture and lipid content in hair, making for the ultimate hydration boost and re-invigorating damaged strands.

Where to Buy?
OGX Frizz-Defy/Moisture + Shea Soft & Smooth Shampoo, Conditioner, and Creamy Hair Butter are available for $7.99 each at Ulta, Walgreens, CVS, Target, Walmart and other major retailers.

Your Perfect Shower Accessory: Olay's NEW DUO Dual-Sized Body Cleanser!

Affiliate Link Press Sample

Every once in awhile a super fun product comes around that just adds that little perk in my morning routine. For me, that is my recently discovered Olay DUO Dual-Sided Body Cleanser

What can I say, my morning shower is my "me time" it is that 10 minute experience to just pamper myself before my day begins and before the "Mommy" demands begin. Anything that I can do to either pamper myself in the shower and/or save time, is a plus in my book! The Olay DUO accomplishes both: the scent is intoxicating and the 2-in-1 feature really is a timesaver. Plus, it is soothing to use!

Dual Users:
I am an admitted "dual user"...I tend to use BOTH bar soap and body washes in the shower. According to Olay, there are many other like me "out there": those of us who really like the clean feel of a bar soap but also enjoy the caring and soothing benefits of a body wash. Well, Olay has attempted to get the feel of both a bar soap and a body wash into one unique product: the Olay Duo Dual-Sided Body Cleanser.

So, what is the Olay DUO exactly? Here is what Olay has to say:

DUO unites the clean of a bar, the care of a body wash and the experience of a puff/implement, giving consumers the multi-sensory experience they desire for the best of all worlds.

DUO is a breakthrough dual-sided cleaning tool infused with a flexible cleaner inside. The scrubby side exfoliates and renews skin surface, the soft flexible cleanser interior conforms and lathers, and the smooth side softens and conditions. The result is a deep, refreshing clean for noticeably invigorated, soft skin.

How You DUO:
• Experience the DUO daily for a complete, close clean and invigorated, healthy-looking skin
• Just add water for a rich cleansing lather
• Enjoy your feel of clean using the scrubby and
smooth sides as you like
• Use daily and hang to dry after each shower
• DUO’s built-in cleanser indicates when it’s time to dispose and get a new one, when lather fades (up to 30 uses)

Why You DUO:
• MORE EFFECTIVE: Patented multi-layered cleansing technology delivers a 2X better clean vs. our basic body wash + a puff
• DEEPER EXFOLIATION: Provides a deeper clean as it exfoliates surface skin deeper than a body wash puff
• COMPLETE CLEAN: Flexible cleanser glides and contours to your every move and groove for a close, complete clean
• EXPERIENTIAL SCENT: Delightful scent experience with 3-4x more fragrance ingredients than our current bar soaps and body washes

The DUO is just so simple and easy to use! I really enjoy using the DUO in the shower and will admit that I am fully hooked to both the scent and the experience! Just try it! I am sure you will love it, too.

As always, thanks for reading!
XOXO!!!

Did you watch the recent MTV Movie & TV Awards? I just love checking out the celebrity beauty breakdowns of all of these events.

So, I am super excited to bring you info about Jordana Brewster’s look from the recent 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards so you can get-the-look, too!

Celebrity makeup artist Fabiola Arancibia partnered with POND’S to share how she created POND’S brand ambassador and Fast & Furious franchise star Jordana’s glowing look. Fabiola’s recap below includes her style inspiration, product breakdown and expert glam tips.

“Jordana’s sexy black dress by Antonio Berardi for tonight's MTV Movie & TV Awards paired with her architectural-style ponytail inspired me to give her a blue cat eye.

I wanted to keep Jordana’s skin looking radiant throughout the night, so we started by cleansing her skin with POND’S Original Fresh MoistureClean Towelettes. They are infused with Cold Cream Technology, so they also left her skin extra soft and revitalized. I then used POND’S Dry Skin Cream to give her a healthy glow and prime her skin for makeup application.

I wanted to accentuate her eyes and used all NARS products to do so. I rimmed her eyes in Black Moon Eyeliner then used Ursa Major (dark blue) Shadow over the liner. I used two coats of Givenchy mascara and then defined her eyebrows with a medium brown shadow.

I wanted to give her an overall glow, so I used NARS Laguna Bronzer on her cheeks and around her hairline. I finished the look with Chihuahua Lip Gloss by NARS.”

Where to Buy:
POND’S products range from $4.89-8.29 and are sold at mass retailers, select drugstores and supermarkets nationwide.
