GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINEE NICOLE KIDMAN
MAKEUP ARTIST: KATE SYNNOTT

INSPIRATION
“The inspiration for Nicole’s makeup look was a modern take on old Hollywood glamour to compliment her Versace structured red dress. The makeup look was all about the lashes and lips! We went for a deep matte red lip. I wanted the lips to have a modern velvet feel to compliment Nicole’s gorgeous creamy porcelain skin!”

PRODUCT FOCUS: Neutrogena Healthy Skin Radiant Cream Concealer
“Concealer is the most important part of any red carpet look. I like to use a light weight foundation and build up concealer for extra coverage, that way you get a natural but flawless look! I always use a sponge for concealer application to help press the product into the skin. Healthy Skin Radiant Cream Concealer is the perfect concealer for a red carpet look because it’s infused with skin-loving ingredients, like Vitamin E and peptides.”

Everyday Favorites for the Body: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Body Gel Cream and Water Gel Lotion SPF

Affiliate Link Press Sample

Everyday Favorites for the Body:
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Body Gel Cream and Water Gel Lotion SPF

Neutrogena has long been one of my go-to brands for facial skincare. Actually, Neutrogena's Hydro Boost Gel-Cream with Hyaluronic Acid for Extra-Dry Skin (unscented) is my Holy Grail Hyaluronic Acid product that I use religiously twice a day. It is my perfect pre-moisturizer step for before sunscreen in the moring and before my treatment products and moisturizers in the evening. I have tried a lot of hyaluronic acid based gels and this one is certainly my fave. I love that it is fragrance free (the Extra Dry formula of this product). So, it is totally non-irritating. I literally wish all skincare was fragrance-free. While I am not 100% fragrance-free with my products, I should be. Fragrance is an irritant for me. So, my skin literally looks better when I use products without fragrance.

So, with my love of the Hydro Boost line for facial skincare, you know that I am excited about the recently released Hydro Boost body range!

Hydro Boost Body:
So many of us take such great care to moisturize our faces. However, do we give the same attention to our body? Yes, our body needs moisture, too! These Hydro Boost body products give your body that quench of hydration that it needs. These products help maintain your moisture balance for maximum skin hydration. The entire line is fantastic! Today I am going to feature two products in particular because I use them almost every single day without fail.

Hydro Boost Body Gel Cream Sensitive and Dry Skin Formula:
I love the super lightweight feel of this moisturizer. I really feel like my skin just drinks this in! Plus, it has a  fragrance-free version (yay!!!). So, it is totally non-irritating. If you have sensitive dry skin, this is a must. It has made such a difference in the moisture and comfort of my skin! I like to apply this right after my morning shower on to damp lightly towel-dried skin (just lightly dabbed with a towel so I am not dripping). This really locks in the moisture. It is super light weight, fast absorbing, and totally non-greasy. I like to focus this on my legs and torso (and I use an SPF on my upper body and the Whipped Body Balm on my feet). Love this and highly recommend!

Hydro Boost Water Gel Lotion Sunscreen SPF 50:
As you guys know, I am religious about my sun protection!!! Carcinoma and Melanomia run in my family. I have super fair skin and I absolutely need the daily protection of SPF. This suncreen does double duty as a moisturizer. I apply this to my neck and chest and arms as those areas get sun exposure on a daily basis. I like that the SPF is high at 50. So, I really feel protected when I use this (and hydrated!).

What do you love from the Hydro Boost line? It really is my very favorite line from Neutrogena! Honestly, these are products that I hope that they continue to make forever as they are staples in my routine.

Neutrogena Intense Gel Eyeliner
Neutrogena Nourishing Brow Pencil in Brown
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Plumping Mascara in Black
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Lip Shine in Radiant Rose

SKIN PREP
I always like to begin makeup application with a fresh clean face. I start by cleansing and hydrating Kerry’s skin with the new Neutrogena Hydro Boost Cleansing Towelettes and applying Hydro Boost Water Gel to boost hydration, lock in moisture, and nourish skin. This is a great gel cream that can be used as a primer before makeup application. It hydrates while creating a smooth canvas to achieve flawless skin. I apply it all over the face and then proceed to moisturizing the lips with Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Lip Treatment, and leave it on until lipstick application. I blot the lip with tissue paper and apply the desired lip shade.

MAKEUP APPLICATION
Once the Hydro Boost Water Gel is absorbed on the skin, I begin makeup application. My first makeup application step is to highlight and conceal imperfections wherever needed with Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer in Deep, which is the shade that compliments Kerry's skin tone. I apply it under the eye area to conceal any darkness and highlight certain areas of the face where I want light to reflect. These areas are:  under eye, nose bridge, center chin, and center of forehead. To create an even skin tone on Kerry, I used Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup in Cocoa. This foundation is one of my favorites, it truly makes the skin glow, gives great coverage, it's long lasting, and creates a healthy complexion without having to use any additional enhancers on the skin. It’s the perfect match to Kerry’s skin tone, and makes her skin look flawless all day long. I apply it all over her face and blend with a round brush in a circular motion for a smoother and more natural application. Right after the foundation, I always like to apply the blush on the apple of the cheeks and blend upward towards the temples.

For this look, I used Neutrogena Essential Cheek Palette by Kerry Washington in Captivating. My inspiration for the eyes was Bridget Bardot’s winged cat eye with a modern graphic edge and a twist of Rock & Roll.  To create the shape for the eye, I used Neutrogena Precision Liquid Eyeliner and outlined it first, and then filled it in with the same eyeliner. I then lined the water rim with Neutrogena Intense Gel Eyeliner and went over the areas that needed more coverage. To enhance and intensify the eye, I glued Ardell’s 3D Faux Mink Lashes 859 on top lashes, and applied a few coats of the amazing Neutrogena Hydro Boost Plumping Mascara for thickness and volume to top and bottom lashes.

I accentuated Kerry’s eyebrows with Neutrogena Nourishing Brow Pencil in Brown. I always finish the look with the lipstick, and the shade for today’s look is lip liner layered with Neutrogena Hydro Boost Lip Shine in Radiant Rose.

Love Your Lips: Neutrogena's NEW Sheer Smooch Lip Oil

Affiliate Link Press Sample

Love Your Lips:

I am so excited to tell you guys about my new favorite lip product! Seriously, this is the best thing that I have tried on my lips in a long time. The Sheer Smooch Lip Oils are literally the drugstore lip oil I have always been looking for: very sheer beautiful color with moisture and shine minus any fruity scent!

From Neutrogena:
Neutrogena® Sheer Smooch Lip Oil is a lip-loving treatment that does more than your basic balm or go-to gloss. Neutrogena's hydrating lip oil will smooth, soothe, and nourish dry lips with a moisturizing formula of Vitamin E, Camellia Seed Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil and Jojoba Oil. Wear on bare lips for a sheer hint of color or layer over lipstick for a glossy sheen.

The Skinny:
  • Sheer hint of color
  • High-impact shine
  • Reduces the appearance of dry lips
  • Made with Camellia Seed Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil and Jojoba Oil

I got to try out all 4 shades. Honestly, they are so sheer that you could literally go with any of these shades as they all look about the same on my lips (my lips are naturally very pigmented so these really look completely sheer on my lips). I honestly love that they are so sheer!

These Neutrogena® Sheer Smooch Lip Oils make my lips feel so smooth and comfortable! The dryness dissappears and my lips looks soft, smooth, shiny, and comfortable.

Be sure to check these out. I hope Neutrogena keeps these as a permanent item!

Get the Look with Neutrogena: Kerry Washington at the Met Gala

KERRY WASHINGTON
MAKEUP ARTIST: CAROLA GONZALEZ

Have you seen all of the beautiful and unique artsy looks from the Met Gala? This has to be one of my very favorite red carpet events to cover as the looks are just so creative from head-to-toe!

Kerry Washington looked beautiful, as always, in her super unique look. Kerry is a Neutrogena Brand Ambassador. They used many of my favorite Neutrogena products on her for her look and to prep her skin for her look. I am a HUGE fan of the HydroBoost line. I am not surprised it was a key ingredient in making her skin look so good! So, here is her beauty breakdown directly from Neutrogena:

SKINCARE PREP

“In order to achieve Kerry’s healthy glowing complexion, I always start by cleansing her skin with Neutrogena’s Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes in Fragrance Free. I always like to begin makeup application with clean, fresh skin.  I then proceed to using the Neutrogena Hydro Boost dream team.  My first step, Hydro Boost Water Gel layered with Hydro Boost Hydrating Serum, to boost hydration, and Hydro Boost City Shield Facial Gel Mist to lock in moisture, and replenish skin. The combination of these products work great together as a primer to use before makeup application because they hydrate while creating a smooth canvas to achieving flawless skin. I then proceed to moisturizing the lips with Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Hydrating Lip Treatment and leave it on until lipstick application. I blot the lip with tissue paper and apply the desired lip shade.”

MAKEUP APPLICATION

“Once the Hydro Boost trio has absorbed into the skin, I begin makeup application. My first makeup application step is to highlight and conceal imperfections wherever needed with Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer in Deep, which is the shade that compliments Kerry's skin tone. I apply it under the eye area to conceal any darkness and highlight certain areas of the face to reflect light. These areas are: under eye, nose bridge, center chin, and center of forehead. To create an even skin tone on Kerry, I used Neutrogena’s new Hydro Boost Hydrating Foundation Stick in Cocoa. I love this new foundation stick because you can build the foundation from light to full coverage, and it can also be used as a concealer. For Kerry’s eyes I wanted to create an ethereal, playful, and fanciful look. I applied different layers of iridescent eyeshadows and layered them all together and extended the application to her cheekbones. I also layered both shades of  Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Illuminator in Sandstone and Rose Gold right on top of the eyeshadows on the cheekbones to create a more luminous effect.

Right after the highlighter, I applied the blush on top of the highlighters and the apple of the cheeks.  For this look, I used Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Blush in Flushed. I then applied a few Lashify B10 lashes on the edge of the eyes, lined the upper lash line  with  Neutrogena Intense Gel Eyeliner in Dark Brown, and applied a few coats of Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Plumping Mascara for thickness and volume to top and bottom lashes.

I accentuated Kerry’s eyebrows with Neutrogena Nourishing Brow Pencil in Brown.  I always finish the look with the lipstick,  and the shade for today’s look is  Neutrogena’s MoistureSmooth Color Stick in Almond Nude.”

PRODUCT FOCUS: NEUTROGENA HYDRO BOOST HYDRATING FOUNDATION STICK + HYDRO BOOST ILLUMINATOR

“The Hydro Boost Hydrating Foundation Stick has a coverage range from light to full. It’s buildable, and can be also be used as a concealer to spot conceal any unevenness on the skin. It has a very creamy and hydrating formula and can be applied with a sponge applicator or a round foundation brush. I also love the new Hydro Boost Illuminator, it glides smoothly onto the skin. It gives a very nice natural sheen to the skin and can also be used on the body to highlight areas where you want to illuminate the skin. Today I layered the Sandstone and Rose Gold Illuminator and applied them on Kerry’s cheekbones with a small round brush in circular motion.”

Introducing Hydro Boost Body and NEW from Neutrogena Hydro Boost facial care!

Affiliate Link Press Sample

Some of my very favorite and even holy grail skincare products are from Neutrogena...and specifically from the Hydro Boost line! Neutrogena's Hydro Boost facial care line is insanely popular. So, it is no surprise that they have expanded their facial skincare line and added a NEW Hydro Boost body range!

Hydro Boost Gel Cream Extra Dry Skin Formula

As I mentioned, Hydro Boost is at the top of my list when it comes to skincare favorites. Their Hydro Boost Gel Cream Extra Dry Skin Formula is my #1 favorite product for hydration! I use this absolutely every single time that I wash my face. I layer this on after washing onto damp skin. I allow this to absorb and then I follow up with my morning or evening skincare routine! Highly recommend!!!

So, lets get to the new product releases! I am so excited about the expansion of the Hydro Boost line.

So many of us take such great care to moisturize our faces. However, do we give the same attention to our body? Yes, our body needs moisture, too! These Hydro Boost body products give your body that quench of hydration that it needs. These products help maintain your moisture balance for maximum skin hydration.

This is a richer gel than the Gel Cream. So, I like to use this after a shower or bath to my feet and elbows and any extra dry areas. It has such a unique texture...almost like a facial primer/serum. My skin drinks this in and it leaves a smooth/silky barrier. I just love it. I don't have a fragrance-free version of this (not sure that they make one of this). However, I must admit that the fragrance it has is very clean and lovely. So, I do enjoy the scent. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hydro Boost Facial Skincare: Line Expansions
Great news! The already awesome Hydro Boost facial skincare line now has even more options!!! Here are some of the ones that I tried...

Hydro Boost City Shield Facial Gel Mist:
I must admit that I am on the fence about this product. I was kinda hoping for just a lighter/spray version of my beloved Hydro Boost Gel Cream Extra Dry Skin Formula. However, I think this product is going to be a pass for me because I like the Hydro Boost Gel Cream Extra Dry Skin Formula much better. You can spray it directly on your face or spray into your hands and then pat onto the face. This can be a step after cleansing and before applying your regular moisturizer or sunscreen. You can also use this as a referesher during the day. However, I find the high alcohol content to be a bit drying for my sensitive skin. Plus, it does have fragrance which can also contribute to irritation like all fragranced products do. With all that said, if you have normal or oily skin, this might be a really great light weight moisturizer for you.

Hydro Boost City Shield Water Gel Sunscreen:
I have heard so many people complain over the years that they don't wear sunscreen because they don't like the heavy feel, white cast, or potential breakouts of wearing it. If you are avoiding everyday use of sunscreens because of any of those reasons, then this just might be the facial SPF for you! This product absolutely does not feel or look like a sunscreen. It has the same Hydro Boost Water Gel feel that I have come to love...with the added bonus of SPF. So, it sinks in beautifully and hydrates and plumps the skin. It contains powerhouse ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid (like all of the Hydro Boost products) and antioxidants. I am really liking this! My wish: for Neutrogena to make a fragrance-free version of this as it is heavily scented.

Have you tried any of the new Hydro Boost products yet? What are your thoughts? Any new product loves for you?

As always, thanks so much for reading.
XOXO!!!

Make Everyday a SUNDay with Sunshine and Great SPF Protection from Neutrogena®!

Sponsored Post Affiliate Link Press Sample
#EverydayisaSUNday

Don't you just love that perfect Sunday? To me, a perfect Sunday has a relaxed vibe with a mix of personal time and family time with lots of sunshine and outdoor activities. Our weeks are so busy this time of year. We are already in our Back-to-School routines with early mornings at the bus stop, carpool lines at the preschool, busy work weeks for both parents in our household, dance practice, soccer practice, church activities, neighborhood activities, and more! There is no question, we need our weekends to unwind, de-stress, play, and just have fun. To relax and unwind and play, our family gravitates towards outdoor activities. We spend almost our whole weekend outside enjoying the sunshine and in addition, many afternoons during the week.

My Perfect Sunday Fun-Day:
If I was to design my perfect Sunday Fun-Day, it would start with an early morning run. I am a self-proclaimed morning person. Why? In our busy life, mornings are the quiet time in our house. It is a fantastic time for self reflection and getting centered for the day. I like to get the jump on everyone by getting up early for a cup of coffee in silence and solitude. Next, I get in my workout gear and running shoes, grab my phone for some tunes, and head out for a neighborhood run and trail run. I like escaping to the trails to get in some nature and exercise amongst the trees and the streams. Then I get home and make a nice big brunch for the family which includes pancakes, eggs, and the works! Often I have two little helpers mixing up the pancakes with me. Then we spend the rest of the morning playing outside in the backyard with the kids running around and swinging and climbing on the playset and my husband and I working on and tending to our gardens and yard. I occasionally retreat to my favorite spot in the yard: my hammock...sometimes with a book and sometimes with my kids cuddled up beside me. After a nice lunch outside on the deck, we usually get organized for an afternoon at the pool. So, we pack our bags and snacks, towels, sunglasses, hats, SPFs, and head to the pool. There is no question, at the end of this day, we are exhausted. Yet, we are happy and our hearts are full and family memories were made. You can make any day a Fun-day with outside time and smiles.

Sun Protection and Our Philosophy:
Protecting ourselves from the harmful effects of the sun are of paramount importance for our family. Not only do we all have fair skin that is prone to burning, but also there is a family history of skin cancer in our family. We know first hand how dangerous the sun can be. However, we love and cherish our outdoor time! So, forget hiding away from the sun. We can live our outdoor life knowing we are protected when we wear our Neutrogena SPF and practice good sun safety.

Good sun safety includes daily application of Neutrogena® SPF. There are so many formulas available to meet your needs. Be it a morning run, when you need sweat-proof Neutrogena® Sport formulas, or pool-side with water safe sunscreen.

SPF and Sun Safety Tips:
One of my biggest and best tips is to apply sunscreen head-to-toe at least 15 minutes before going outside. My kids are totally used to the routine of SPF application before going outdoors. I really like that I have already instilled this habit with them at a young age. Also, note: SPF is not just for days when you are going to the pool or planning outdoor fun. SPF is for every day!

Even with SPF application, you still need to practice other sun safe habits. Wear sunglasses and hats! This protects your eyes and your sensitive faces. Lightweight sun protective clothing can help shield you from harmful rays during peek sun hours. Seek shade when you can. We are lucky to have great natural shade in our yard from the trees. However, we also have a big table umbrella and always pick a spot at the pool with shade and an umbrella for pool breaks.

Last but not least, you must reapply sunscreen throughout the day! Especially remember to reapply when you have been swimming or exercising as sweat and water wears the sunscreen off faster.

Products I love:
I use a variety of SPFs from Neutrogena®. The brand has many options available. So, you can tailor your sunscreen selection based on the type of activity and type of sun exposure you expect.

Our family's sun protection needs vary with our skin types, ages, and activities. My son has eczema. So, I trust his sun saftey with the gentle Neutrogena® Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen SPF50. It is so gentle and it never flares his eczema nor does it cause irritation. For the rest of us, the Neutrogena® Ultra-Sheer is a standard go-to SPF. There are great facial formulas, too! I particularly enjoy using the SheerZinc Face Dry-Touch Broad Spectrum SPF 50. Zinc is so gentle and the protection just can't be beat! When I am going out running or will be gardening or exercising outdoors, I like to choose the Neutrogena® CoolDry Sport SPF 70. The protection is sweat-proof and is water resistant for 80 minutes.

Have you tried the Neutrogena® Hydro Boost line? If you haven't yet, be sure to check it out! I am obsessed with the Water Gel moisturizer. It is amazing! So, it is no surprise that I am also a fan of the Neutrogena® Hydro Boost Water Gel Lotion Sunscreen SPF 30. I love the water-light feel and it gives your skin such a nice boost of hydration!

Here are some of my favorites:

Neutrogena® Ultra Sheer® Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 100+: Goes on easily and absorbs quickly for an invisible, light-weight feel on your skin. Formulated with Helioplex® Technology, it offers superior broad spectrum protection from aging UVA rays and burning UVB rays.

Neutrogena® Hydro Boost Water Gel Lotion (SPF 30 and/or 50): Delivers superior broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and hydration with a water-light, refreshing feel. This water-resistant sunscreen lotion with SPF 50 leaves skin looking healthy and moisturized for up to eight hours without any greasy residue or white marks.

Neutrogena® Sheer Zinc Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum (SPF 30 and/or 50): A mineral sunscreen that features our breakthrough Purescreen® naturally-sourced 100% zinc oxide technology.

Make Every Day a Fun-Day:
Sunshine and good times are my idea of a perfect Sunday Fun-Day. With good SPF protection from Neutrogena®, you can make any day a Fun-Day with the comfort of knowing you are protecting yourself and your family from the harmful rays of the sun. So, forget hiding away from the sun. Life your life knowing you are protected!

What is your perfect Sunday? I would love to hear! I am always looking for great ideas for sunshine and family time. :)

As always, thanks for reading!

Starting my Retin-A (tretinoin) Journey: Skincare Routine and Tips!

I Bought It  Affiliate Link Press Sample

Starting my Retin-A (tretinoin) Journey!

I am so super excited to announce a new skincare journey! After years of being off of perscription topical facial medications, I am delving back into that routine once again. Yes, I am getting back on Retin-A (tretinoin)...and I am super excited and eagarly anticipating the scientifically proven results that come from using tretinoin.

Skincare Background and History:
Before diving into what my "new" routine looks like and exactly what products that I use, lets talk about my skincare history and skin type.

I am not new to using tretinoin nor new to Rx skincare or vitamin A derivative products. In the past, I literally used Retin-A for decades. Literally. I started on Retin-A (and Retin-A Micro) as a teenager for my moderate acne. I used Retin-A in my teens and 20s (as well as other Rx medications like oral antibiotics, Benzoyl peroxide washes, topical antibiotics like Clindamycin, azelaic acid cream, and more). At some point in my early 30's, I switched over to Differin (which was then only available by perscription).

My acne was always well controlled while under the supervision of a dermatologist, but it never went away. I would always flare up during "that time of the month". Plus, my skin honestly never tolerated the Retin-A/tretinoin very well. I was plagued with sensitive skin, dryness, flakiness, and sensitivity to hot/cold (flushing). So, as my acne really did start to get more mild in my 30s, I was ready to make the switch to the milder and better-tolerated Differin. Differin worked wonders for me and kept my skin clear with minimal irriation.

In my mid-late 30's, my focus was on getting pregnant, being pregnant, and nursing my babies. So, needless to say, I got off all my Rx topical acne medications. If you are not aware, it is not considered safe to use Vitamin-A derivative products like Retin-A or even Retinol when you are pregnant or nursing.

Years later, I am done having babies and, cough, I haven't gotten any younger. So, needless to say, I am ready to get back on the Retin-A bandwagon! Retin-A is one of the, if not the top anti-acne and anti-aging skincare ingredient. It is proven. It is effective. There are literally decades of research that it works. As much as I love all of the lotions and potions that I try out, tretinoin is the one that is proven. So, I am ready to get it back into my skincare routine.

My Skincare Needs and Focus:

So, why go back on Retin-A rather than Differin? Well, Retin-A does have more research behind it (Differin is newer). I love that Differin is now available over the counter. While Differin does have many proven skincare benefits like clearing the skin and rejuvinating the skin's appearance, it is my understanding that it is not proven to work in the deep layers of the skin nor will it stimulate collagen production. My skincare focus is now not only to keep my skin clear (yes, that adult mild acne has persisted...it is mild, but, yes...annoying) but also I want to get proven anti-aging benefits. I want to stimulate collagen production in my skin and tretinoin is proven to do this. Honestly, I think all of us women over the age of 40 should consider adding tretinoin to our skincare routines!

This time around my approach to Retin-A use is much different than when I was in my teens and 20s. I was so despirate for clear skin back then that I really neglected to moisturize adequately. I think that lack of moisturization contributed to the fact that my skin never tolerated tretinoin very well. Now I think differently. I know from my extensive years of beauty blogging that most moisturizers do not break me out. My breakouts are caused by hormones, not moisturizers! I wish I knew that back in the early years!

Also, I know that 3-5 days a week of Tretinoin use is enough to be effective as an anti-aging skincare ingredient. So, I am going to give my skin "breaks" from the active ingredient trentinoin. In addition, I am not going to neglect using other products that I have used and loved for years (like my Retinol products)...I am just going to use them in other ways (like application on my neck, chest, and hands) and facial application on nights "off" from the Retin-A.

Also, I am planning a very specific stragegy for tretinoin application and weekly treatments with moisturizing masks. So, lets talk now specifically of what my morning and evening skincare routine looks like on nights that I use tretinoin (note, my skincare routine on nights off will be more like my previous skincare routine with products that I have used and loved for years as well as new skincare products that I am testing)...but, on nights with Retin-A, I am going to specifically follow my routine listed below.

My Tretinoin Routine:
Just a note before I jump into my routine! My plan has been to start slow. I am now in the first month of use, so I am only using tretinoin once a week. Yes, only once. No reason to flare up irriation. Slow and steady is my goal here as I am really looking at long-term and lifelong usage here. So, my progression is and will be the following: first month= 1x per week. 2nd month= 2x per week. 3rd month=3x per week. At that point I will stick with the 3x per week for a few months to see if it is sufficiant. I might bump up to 4x a week around the 6 month mark and then stick with that a few more months before deciding if I want to go up to 5 or if that is too irritating. Also, of note: I am starting out at 0.05% strength. My plan is to up the strength once I have gotten up to 5 nights a week of use without irriation. I know that this process might take years. However, I know that is a long-term goal.

Morning Routine:
For my Retin-A/tretinoin nights, I am sticking to very gentle and basic products. Some of these products are "new" to me and some are old favorites that I am returning to. I have VERY sensitive skin that is even that much more sensitive and irritated from the tretinoin. So, I need to be super gentle to the skin and I really need to layer on the moisture as well. I have often had issues with irriation in the past from scented products and fragrance as well as chemical sunscreens. So, now I am trying to avoid them as much as I can...and almost always will on nights that I use tretinoin. That is not to say that I will *never* use a scented product, I am just going to try to really cut down on my skin's exposure to fragrance and chemical sunscreens. Now, on my neck, chest, and hands, fragrances and chemical sunscreens do not irritate, so I can continue to use those ingredients there.

Cleanse:
Salicylic Acid-based cleanser in the Shower. I have a few that I like and some are fragrance free (my preference) but some are not. Either way, all of these have not caused irritation in the mornings on days that I use Retin-A. Most of these cleansers I have used on and off for years and are favorites already.

Moisturize:
Next, I moisturize with a hyaluronic acid based moisturizer (like Neutrogena's HydroBoost). Note: this is the best tip!!! Apply hyaluronic acid moisturizer to *wet skin*!!! It works much better this way as hyaluronic acid works by grabbing on to water and holding it to the skin's top layer. This will prevent moisture loss in your skin.

Eye Creams and Benzyol Peroxide:
Next, I apply eye cream around my eye area and spot treat with Benzyol Peroxide as needed (I often skip this step).

SPF:
After letting the hyaluronic acid moisturizer time to sink in and allowing time for your skin to feel dry, apply your daily sunscreen. I personally like physical (non-chemical) sunscreens the best. They give the strongest sun protection AND they tend to not be irritating. My skin is generally irritated by chemical sunscreens...and that has only incrased since being on Retin-A. So, I am just not messing around any more with Chemical Sunscreens unless I am applying them to my body or neck/chest (they dont bother me in those areas).

Evening Routine:
So, here is my evening skincare routine for the nights that I apply Retin-A/tretinoin. Note: this is my routine only for those nights and I deviate from this the rest of the week on nights "off" of Retin-A (this allows me to continue product testing for the blog and using some of the other skincare treats that I love that cannot be combined with tretinoin).

Remove Eye Makeup:
Typically, I use a Micellar Water to quickly swipe off my eye makeup. I don't have a go-to Micellar water as I seem to like them all about equally. So, I really switch around on brands each time I finish a bottle. I do not wear heavy eye makeup. So, Micellar water works okay to break down the eye makeup (however it does not remove it completely...but, no worries, you will see in step two that I use a creamy cleanser that will remove the remainder). If I am wearing heavier makeup after a night out, I like using a creamy makeup remover like IT Cosmetic's Bye Bye Makeup™ 3-in-1 Makeup Melting Balm (and OMG, it is awesome!!! )

Wash Face:
I wash my face with a gentle and non-foaming moisturizing cleanser. I like using a creamy cleanser for evenings. Creamy cleansers are more gentle and hydrating. Plus, they have the added boost of effectively removing my remaining eye makeup after the Micellar Water step (see above).

Moisturize:
I allow my skin to air dry just for a moment so that it is not "dripping" wet, and then I apply my moisturizer to my *wet skin*. It is just much more effective that way. I like using the most gentle and basic and *fragrance free* moisturizers on Retin-A nights. Honestly, I should use fragrance-free moisturizers every evening...I just haven't totally made that switch yet as there are some other fragranced ones that I love. However, I know my skin would thank me if I went 100% fragrance-free. When I cut down on fragrance, it drastically improves the tone of my skin as I seem to respond to fragrance in products (and chemical sunscreens) with redness. I also apply my Eye cream during this step.

Apply Retin-A/tretinoin:
I wait at least 30 minutes before applying my Retin-A/tretinoin. This is essential as your skin needs to be 100% dry to avoid irriration. Water draws products deeper into the skin and this would cause too much irriation. So, it really cuts down on your irritation when you apply after 30 minutes to skin that has been previously moisturized.

So, those are my routines for morning and evening. Now lets talk a little bit about the products that I recommend. There are more that I love than this, however these are the actual items that are in current roatation for my above-listed routines:

Product Recommendations for Use while on Retin-A/tretinoin:

Neutrogena:
I love Neutrogena and have literally been a fan since my teenage years. It was always the brand recommended by my Dermatologist back then and now my new Dermatologist's office recommends Neutrogena as well. I personally love that Neutrogena is readily available at the drugstore and that Neutrogena has so many fragrance-free options for their top products!

Here is what I am loving from Neutrogena:

  • Neutrogena | Hydro Boost Gel-Cream Extra-Dry Skin formula Fragrance-Free: OMG! I LOVE this gel-cream. Seriously, you need a hyaluronic acid based product in your routine if you are on Retin-A!
  • Neutrogena | Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser Foaming Formula (note: this is not a drying foaming formula...so, don't let the "foaming" discriptor scare you): Love this cleanser! Works great without over drying. I use this in the mornings when I am not wanting to use a salicylic acid based cleanser.
  • Neutrogena | Oil-Free Moisture Sensitive Skin: This is a great basic oil free and fragrance free moisturizer. I use this on wet skin after washing face and 30 minutes before applying Retin-A.
  • Neutrogena | Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer with SPF 50 Sensitive Skin: Gentle physical blockers and nice formula!
  • Neutrogena | Hydro Boost Gentle Cleansing Lotion: This is a new cleanser from Neutrogena that I am loving. I rotate with this and the Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser when not using a SA based cleanser in the mornings.

Olay is another brand that I have used and trusted for decades. Their Olay Complete moisturizers with SPF have been in heavy roation in my skincare routine over the years. Here are the Olay items that are in rotation and/or that I recommend for a Retin-A/treteinoin skincare routine. The Olay Complete SPF 30 Sensitive, the Olay Regenerist Fragrance-Free Regenerating Serum, and the Olay Complete SPF 15 Sensitive (note: the SPF on this one is rather low at SPF 15 for anyone on Retin-A...however, if you layer this with other SPF products, like a BB Cream or if you are not going to be outdoors it would be fine).

CeraVe and More!
There are quite a few other products that I am loving right now for use in conjuction with Retin-a/tretinoin treatment. CeraVe clearly stands out as a frontrunner with Neutrogena. I love the CeraVe brand so much as their products all contain ceramides which are just such amazing skincare ingredients! I literally use the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser every night and I absolutely adore it....possibly my favorite facial cleanser ever! I love the other products listed here, too. Belli's Cleanser has been a favorite for years and it still works well for morining use while on Retin-A...and Kiehl's is an amazing luxury line that also works well for sensitive skin and skin undergoing Retin-A treatment! Kiehl's creams even work well on my son's sensitive eczema skin!

All opinions are my own.

Clear Skin Skincare Favorites:
Winter is a great time to focus on your skincare routine. Sure, I love trying new products. I am a beauty-blogger after all. However, when it comes to skincare, I rely on many tried-and-true long term favorites to keep my skin clear.

When I try out skincare products, I do so slowly and only add in one or two new products at a time. However, even with careful testing and good clear skin habits, I still occasionally have to deal with breakouts. So, if I am experiencing a lot of breakouts, I always go back to these clear skin favorites to get my skin back into shape and to clear it up. Some of these products rarely leave my skincare routine.

My Skin:
Before diving any further into my list of favorites, let me give you a little bit of background about my skin so you can know where I am coming from. My skin is somewhat sensitive and it leans to the oily side of the combination skin type. Most of my oiliness is in my t-zone area. My skin is generally clear. However, I am prone to clogged pores occasionally and do have the ocassional breakout as well (usually on my chin or right by my nose). I tend to gravitate towards products that are non-pore clogging and formulated for combination or oily skin. However, I have to be careful because of my sensitive skin. If I use products that are too harsh, my skin will rebound with redness and irritation bumps (no fun!). So, I especially have to be careful of exfoliating products.

Clear Skin Favorites:

Zapzyt | Acne Wash Cleanser
Zapzyt is one of my go-to brands for clear skin. I love that Zapzyt products are safe, effective, and economical. One of the stand out products in their line is the Acne Wash Cleanser. This clear gel cleanser contains 2% salicylic acid to help treat and prevent breakouts. I like to use this cleanser in the evening to give my skin a good deep clean. It rinses clean with no residue without irritating my sensitive skin. I just love it!

Zapzyt | Acne Treatment Gel:
Even with careful skincare, I do occasionally end up with the problem zit. For spot treatment, I swear by the Zapzyt Acne Treatment Gel. It contains 10% Benzoyl Peroxide to kill acne causing bacteria. In addition to spot treatment, I also apply a little tiny bit of this in the evenings (about 3-4x a week) to the areas that are prone to breakouts like my chin and near my nose (sometimes my hairline, too). If I use this too frequently, it can dry my skin. So, I try to use this just a few times a week preventatively or once a day if I am spot treating a zit.

Neutrogena | Hydro Boost Water Gel:
When my skin is breaking out, I make sure to switch to a light weight moisturizer that I know will not break me our nor clog my pores. I really like the entire Neutrogena Hydro Boost line. I especially enjoy using the Hydro Boost Water Gel moisturizer. Even acne-prone skin needs hydration! Plus, acne products can be drying and irritating. So, it is essential that you keep a moisturizer in your skincare routine...even if you are breaking out. This product really boosts your hydration and soothes any dry areas. The key ingredient in this moisturizer is HJyaluronic Acid which holds 1,000 times its weight in water and really draws water to your skin which hydrates and plumps your skin.

L'Oreal | Pure Clay Masks:
Nothing beats a clay mask to draw out impurities from your skin. I am pretty obcessed with masks and like to do a weekly mask treatment. When my skin is breaking out, I always use a clay mask. L'Oreal has a fantastic assortment of clay masks. Right now I am especially loving this Pure Clay Mask Clear & Comfort formula. This mask's key ingredients are clay to draw out impurities and seaweed to comfort the skin. After using this, my skin feels super soft and smooth! L'Oreal has quite a wide variety of masks. So, you can really pick your mask depending on your skin's exact needs at the moment.

Dermalogica | Overnight Retinol Repair 1%:
In terms of breakout prevention, I am a big believer in Vitamin A products like Retinol (or perscription strenght if you go to a dermatologist). Retinol does amazing things for your skin. Yes, it fights things like acne but also is effective with "age prevention". One of the most powerful over-the-counter vitamin A products that I have tried is Dermalogica's Overnight Retinol Repair 1%. It is super strong. So, it comes with a buffer cream. This way, you can mix more or less of the buffer cream depending on how sensitive your skin is. I usually use about 2 parts of the retinol and 1 part buffer cream.

So, those are my go-to current favorites for Clear Skin! What are yours? I would really love to hear!

As always, thanks for reading!
XOXO!!!
