“You look great…for your age”
"You look great...for your age."
"I hope that I look that good when I am 40, too."
"You look great considering you just had a baby."
"You are so skinny, do you eat?"
How many times have you heard comments like these or something else along these same lines? I have heard these many times and am always a little taken aback by them. It sounds like a compliment, but is it? While the intent may be positive, are phrases like these truly complimentary? I literally cringe inwardly whenever I am faced with one of these comments because it feels like a backhanded compliment and I never really know how to take it or how to respond.
Apparently, I am not alone in these feelings, phew! RoC® points out that such misguided flattery is being directed toward women all too frequently - and they are sick of it. In fact, a majority of them would rather not be complimented at all versus receiving one paired with phrases of this nature.
To uncover the impact of negative words on women 40+, RoC® Skincare conducted a national survey with Wakefield Research and the results showed backhanded compliments can leave a greater impression than what’s seen on the surface.
Study highlights include:
- Women have been told they look good “for their age” typically every six weeks in the past year
- 88% of New York women ages 40+ have been told they look “great for their age” in the past year; Of the cities surveyed, they are the most likely to hear this compliment.
- More than 60% of women have altered their behavior after being told their actions were not “age-appropriate”
- However, 88% refuse to conform to societal standards set for women their age
