Protect Yourself this Summer: Sun Tips from Aveeno Dermatologist Dr. Jeanine Downie

The heat has reached the 90s here in Georgia already. The Summer sun is here and it is strong! What better time to talk SPF, right?!?! While I wear SPF year-round, I really "up" my protection in the Summer.

While I love the sun, I am naturally a shade seeker during peak times. Not only am I fair skinned, not wanting to burn, and wanting the anti-aging benefits, but also I want to protect myself from cancer! Skin Cancer runs in my family (basal cell carcinomas for my Dad) and I have lost a dear friend to Melanoma (I still miss you JoAnn!). So, I am honestly never outside without Sunscreen. I apply it in the mornings to all exposed areas if I know I am going to be spending time out doors.

As an Aveeno Ambassador, I love being able to share tips from the experts behind Aveeno!

Dermatologist Dr. Jeanine Downie's Sun Tips

1. Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

2. Sunscreen protects against harmful UVA/UVB rays, prevents, and slows down the aging process.

3. Make sure to use 1 oz of sunscreen on all exposed skin. Pay careful attention to face, neck, ears, and back of neck/hands. WOW! I have not been using enough sunscreen! I pretty much need to double the amount that I have normally been putting on. This is such a good tip and I wish that I knew this years ago. Well, its never too late to start! I am going to apply this amount from now on.

4. Spread the word and let people know you're using sunscreen! The most important thing a person can do to maintain a healthy complexion is to always use sun protection.

Thanks again to Aveeno for sharing these tips and sending me some extra SPF to stay protected this Summer! Aveeno's Protect + Hydrate Lotion Sunscreen is one of my favorites for everyday wear. I literally keep a bottle of this right with my regular moisturizer in my bathroom to apply in the mornings to my exposed areas: arms, legs, and chest. If I keep it right there to apply after my shower, I never forget! The formula is both sweat and water resistant which is a must between the Georgia heat and all of the outside water-based activities that are a part of my life every day! Aveeno's Protect + Hydrate absorbs quickly, is non-greasy, and smells great, too!
